Local MEC Alternative for Climbing Enthusiasts: Rock Oasis

Rock Oasis, a local climbing gym that also has a wide variety of climbing gear and outdoor apparel, is one of the latest additions to Haystack!

Whether you’re shopping for yourself or for a loved one, it’s the perfect place to pick up all sorts of stuff from harnesses and ropes, to climbing books about some pretty enticing destinations that will inspire you to pack your climbing shoes and just go. All of the staff climb (and some are pretty impressive, despite their lowkey humble demeanors), so there’s always someone to provide recommendations and guidance that really knows what they’re doing.

They have their own branded stuff, like tanks and Ts that you can’t get anywhere else, and the most fun little shoe charms.

One of the benefits of purchasing climbing shoes at a climbing gym is that there are walls right there to try out the fit and feel.

Rock Oasis has a long history in Toronto, originally based at Bathurst and Front St, they relocated to Carlaw and Dundas in 2011, where they are currently located. Longtime climbers still reminisce about the legendary 60-foot walls at their old location. But what the new location lacks in height, they make up with 6 bays for toproping and lead climbing and an entire lead climbing “cave” complete with a long, nearly horizontal ceiling with epic overhang routes. They also have two bays with auto belays, so you can toprope solo when you’re in the mood for a solo session. Their bouldering area is a super fun and social place to hang out, and they’re in the process of dramatically expanding it.

If you’ve never climbed at any of the gyms owned by Rock Oasis, and want to give climbing there a shot, shoot us an email at info@haystackfinds.com and Haystack’s cofounder can likely bring you along for a free climbing session, including all gear required.

Check them out at 388 Carlaw, near the intersection of Carlaw and Dundas.
